Filipino actress Dolly de Leon copped the best supporting actress honor for Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” at the recently concluded 58th Guldbagge Awards in Östlund’s home country, Sweden.
“Of course, it’s an extremely important award for me. It was given by Sweden’s most prestigious award-giving body, and Ruben is Swedish,” De Leon told Inquirer Entertainment on Tuesday afternoon.
De Leon continues to keep writing history with the recognition she has been receiving for her performance in “Triangle of Sadness” as Abigail, a toilet manager on a luxury cruise ship who later becomes the leader of a group of survivors after the vessel sinks, leaving them marooned on an island.
“In an industry where Filipinos like me are hardly represented, thank you Guldbagge for such an honor. Thank you to our producers for making my best ever filmmaking experience in ‘Triangle of Sadness’ possible,” De Leon said in her acceptance speech during the awards show held on Monday night (Manila time).

“Thank you to our writer-director, Ruben, for changing my life with the gift of Abigail, who has struggled as much as I have in this world, where diversity and inclusion are still things that we have to work hard to achieve. Most of all, thank you to the great nation of Sweden for shaping Ruben and his wicked sense of humor,” De Leon said in the speech that was read onstage on her behalf.
The veteran actress is currently in the United States as part of the promotion of “Triangle of Sadness,” which is in the running for a nomination under the best international feature film category of the 95th Academy Awards.
De Leon also made history as the first Filipino actress to get a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress.
