Sponge Cola has again serenaded fans with a new song, “Hometown,” inspired by the hit Korean drama “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.”

The band, which is marking its 20th anniversary today, Dec. 14, released “Hometown” on YouTube and Spotify, among other music platforms, also today. It also released the song’s official music video on YouTube, which has earned 1,000 views and 178 likes as of this writing.

“Hometown,” which is produced by Joey Santos, seeks to touch those who have been emotionally crushed and in love. It combines grunge rock elements with electronic textures and anthemic pop sensibilities to talk about coming home after a long, tiring journey, as per release by Sony Music Entertainment today.

“Embodying home in the form of a person, the captivating rock tune was penned by vocalist and guitarist Yael Yuzon as a way to reimagine the coastal town [in ‘Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’],…” it stated.

Yuzon, for his part, admitted he was “pleasantly surprised” by the finished song, especially since it is about a piece of fiction.

“As a writer, I was one layer away from phenomena that should have made the end product more removed, disconnected. Instead, we ended up with something more visceral, something that resonates from within,” he was quoted as saying.

Yuzon added that he wanted the “nuances of an ocean breeze” included in “Hometown,” and he believes they “nailed it.”

Meanwhile, bassist Gosh Dilay said the song evokes the feeling of “traveling to unfamiliar places, but still ends up unwinding and wanting to go home.”

Yuzon first teased “Hometown” back in October 2021, when he revealed he wrote a song about “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.” At the time though, he did not indicate a title for the track.

Sponge Cola is set to treat fans with their 20th anniversary showcase, “Bottoms Up!” to be held at the PETA Theater today.  /ra
