MANILA, Philippines—Jenny Ramp, of Santa Ignacia, Tarlac, was crowned Miss Philippines Earth in ceremonies staged at Tag Resort in Coron, Palawan, today, Aug. 6.

She inherited the crown from Naelah Alshorbaji, who finished in the Top 8 of the 2021 Miss Earth pageant held virtually.

Alshorbaji and her predecessor Roxanne Baeyens won their national crowns in virtual editions of the Miss Philippines Earth pageant held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the first time since the pandemic started that pageant organizer Carousel Productions staged a physical competition in this year’s hybrid edition of the Miss Philippines Earth pageant.

The 2022 pageant started with 39 ladies participating in several virtual competitions. The Top 20 ladies moved on to the physical phase of the contest.

A downpour temporarily halted the staging of the coronation program Saturday morning, with the venue being outdoor. It commenced a couple of hours from the supposed start of the competition, but heavy rains interrupted the program after the announcement of the 10 finalists.

The second half of the program was conducted in an indoor venue.

Also proclaimed queens were Miss Philippines Air Jimema Tempra, of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental; Miss Philippines Water Angeline Mae Santos, of Trece Martires City; Miss Philippines Fire Erika Vina Tan, of Legazpi City; and Miss Philippines Ecotourism Nice Lampda, of Bayugan City.

Ramp will represent the country in the 2022 Miss Earth pageant, which will be staged in the Philippines later this year.

Next year’s Miss Earth pageant will be held in Vietnam, which already hosted the international tilt in 2010.

The Miss Philippines Earth and Miss Earth pageants, both established in 2001, seek advocates for environmental awareness. This year, the competitions will focus on the planet’s fauna.  /ra
