Binibining Pilipinas may have left pageant fans, including comedian Vice Ganda, in doubt after a delay occurred during the pageant’s announcement of winners, which beauty queen MJ Lastimosa stated was just a confusion mishap.

The coronation night’s hosts Catriona Gray and Nicole Cordoves took a long pause before announcing the titleholder for the Bb. Pilipinas International crown, as seen in a live-streamed video on the pageant’s YouTube channel yesterday, July 31. Gray and Cordoves were seen talking to a staff member who approached them on stage, while the candidates were glancing at each other, seemingly confused about what was causing the delay.

“Well, no pageant experience is complete without a whole lot of suspense,” Cordoves said, while Gray laughed beside her.

Vice Ganda later made his observation over the announcement scene, through his Twitter page today, Aug. 1.

“May very wrong!” he stated. “[Ano] kayang meron sa kaguluhang iyon? Nawa’y walang nagkapalit ng korona.” (There was something very wrong. [I wonder] what might have happened there? I hope the crowns did not get interchanged.)

Meanwhile, Lastimosa, who attended the event, also initially expressed confusion via her Twitter page. She then referenced the 2015 Miss Universe incident where American host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner instead of Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach.

“Kinabahan [ako] akala ko Steve Harvey moment. Pero bulaga si Cebu but Cebu is a powerhouse so there you go,” Lastimosa said.

(I got nervous, I thought it was another Steve Harvey moment. But surprise, it is [Ms. Cebu]. Cebu is a powerhouse, so there you go.)

In a succeeding tweet, Lastimosa clarified that the results were correct and that the pause was just caused by some confusion on the “floor.”

“Walang cheka mga [accla coz] according to the [BPCI] correct ang results. Nalito lang daw sa floor hence the pause,” she stated. “Osha sha tulog na mga marites.)

(There are no issues, friends, because according to [Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.] the results were correct. There was just some confusion on the floor hence the pause. OK, come on, sleep already, gossips.)

Fans also voiced their assessment of what happened, with some of them asking for an explanation from the pageant’s organizers.

“That announcement of winners has a huge space for speculations and conspiracies. The audience [deserves] to have an explanation [regarding that] very long pause or else the audience will be left in doubt and confusion,” one @markzungx said.

“OMG, IF IT’S WRONG ANNOUNCEMENT THEY SHOULD CORRECT IT RIGHT AWAY!!! PRIDE OVER TRUTH,” one @donstutoch4ever said.

“Wondering what went wrong. Nagkamali ba ng announcement? (Was there a mistake in the announcement?)” one @elyse199 stated. “Hope they give us a statement to explain what happened and [why it] took so long for them to announce the winners.”

Binibining Pilipinas proclaimed its new titleholders at the pageant held at Smart Araneta Coliseum, namely Bb. Pilipinas International Nicole Borromeo; Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Gabrielle Camille Basiano; Bb. Pilipinas Globe Chelsea Fernandez, Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Roberta Angela Tamondong, as well as Herlene Budol and Stacey Daniella Gabriel as first and second runners up. JB
