Kristine Hermosa spoke about her and husband Oyo Sotto’s parenting approach, which includes their resolve not to let their kids watch television, to prevent “polluting” their minds.
Hermosa stated that they monitor and lessen their kids’ screen time by having rules on gadgets, in an exclusive interview with King of Talk Boy Abunda, as seen on his YouTube channel yesterday, April 17.
“Kung meron man silang gustong panoorin, kailangan muna naming tingnan kung okay ‘yun bago namin sila payagan. Tapos meron lang silang days na allowed, kunwari on weekends, pero pag weekdays, hindi pwede kasi home school muna tayo. Pag na-allow naman sila, mini-make sure namin na alam namin ‘yung pinapanood nila tsaka may time limit,” she said.
(If they want to watch a show, we need to check first if it is okay before letting them watch it. There are also certain days when they are allowed to watch, for example on weekends, but during weekdays, they need to finish their home schooling first. When we allow them, we make sure that we know what they are watching and that they have a time limit.)
Hermosa then talked about their fear of their kids being exposed to inappropriate content on television, the presence of which is the reason why she and Sotto impose restrictions on watching shows.
“TV wala talaga, kinakabahan kami sa TV kasi malingat ka lang baka kung ano na ‘yung makita nila so mahirap,” she shared. “Masyado pang maaga para ma-pollute ‘yung utak although dadating naman sila sa point na talagang ilalabas na namin sila sa mundo pero at this point gusto namin ‘yung foundation nila matibay.”
(We do not really allow them to watch TV. We are nervous because they might see something inappropriate, so it is hard. It is too early for their minds to be polluted although there will come a point when we will let them explore the world; but at this point, we want to make sure that their foundation is strong.)
Hermosa also pointed out that they explain to the kids why there are such rules, noting that their kids understand them and do not complain.
Hermosa and Sotto have been married for 11 years and have five children together, namely Kiel, Ondrea, Kaleb, Marvic and Vittorio. They welcomed their youngest, Vittorio, in August last year. JB
