Guji Lorenzana’s latest release, “This Beat Will Save You,” was written back in 2018 when he was at a career crossroads: He was getting old, he said, and found himself contemplating whether he should stay in show biz or pivot toward something else. “I was quite unsure if I should continue with show biz or music … or focus on a day job. But I still wanted to contribute to the industry. I put up a talent management company, (Open Door Artists), thinking that’s where I was headed for after show biz,” he said in a recent virtual conference arranged by Viva Records.

“That was what was going through my head when I wrote the song,” the 41-year-old singer-actor added. “I was thinking about just letting the world lead me to where I’m meant to go … It was an uncertain time for me.”

The song stayed in his vault for the next three years, not knowing that it would take on a whole new meaning today. “The basic premise is about going with the flow, which is fitting with what’s happening in the world today because of the pandemic. We try not to worry as much and trust that the beat or music in our lives will save us,” he said of the song.

’90s vibes

Produced by Marcus Davis, the song is a ’90s-vibed dance tune inspired by the music of Michael Jackson and Gary Valenciano. “It can also be about being brokenhearted and depressed … trying not to let these things get to you,” he said. “Life is like music. If you let the beat lead you, there’s going to be a happy ending, there will be something good.”

Earlier this year, Guji and his family—wife, Cheska, and kids, Cassidy, 2, and Brielle, 11 months—all contracted COVID-19. They only experienced mild symptoms, but it was still a scary moment, he admitted.

“My wife lost her sense of taste and smell. My babies and I had the typical symptoms—cough, colds, slight fever. So we stayed in quarantine,” he said.

In isolation, it was his song that reminded him to stay strong and productive. As an online content creator, Guji made the most out of his free time, making song covers and vlogs about his daily life and past travels. He also focused on his day job as the lead representative of the music company Ingrooves. Guji also used “The Beat” in one of his video submissions for Next Up Philippines, an online content creator camp organized by YouTube. “I was one of the 12 winners who were given a P100,000 [equipment] stipend to help us grow our channel, and produce better content” he said. “The camp was held online. We had to do a project every week and the final one featured ‘The Beat,’” Guji related, adding that while he came from an earlier generation, he makes sure to keep his pulse on what’s happening in the digital space.

While he first entered show biz in 2006 as a music artist, Guji eventually branched out to acting on television, film and theater. And given the opportunity, he said he would love to continue juggling these art forms. “Acting never completely left me. I still get cast in movies and series,” he said.
