MANILA, Philippines — Award-winning and veteran actress Rustica Carpio has died, her niece confirmed on Wednesday. She was 91.
“We wish you farewell in your journey to eternity. You’d never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Tita Rustica Carpio,” the actress’ niece Nessea said in a Facebook post.
Carpio died on Tuesday, according to Nessea. She said they are still coordinating with the younger sister of Carpio to know the cause of her death.
Carpio was an actress, author, director, playwright, scholar, literary critic, and book editor. She also served as a dean of the former College of Languages and Mass Communication, now known as the College of Communication, at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
Carpio has appeared in many acclaimed roles like Lady Macbeth, Sisa, Teodora Alonzo, Leonor Rivera and other fictional and historical characters. She has worked with National Artists Lamberto Avellana, Daisy Hontiveros-Avellana, Severino Montano, Rolando Tinio and Ishmael Bernal and Fernando Poe Jr.
The actress also bagged several awards in her career, including the Best Actress in the 33rd Gawad Urian in 2010 for her lead role in Brillante Mendoza’s “Lola,” and many other international recognitions.
