Mavy Legaspi’s first teleserye, “I Left My Heart in Sorsogon,” has yet to even announce an airdate but, already, fans have begun shipping his love team with Kyline Alcantara.
Fan pages for “MavLine” have already sprouted across social media platforms, where candid shots and sightings of the two actors are posted and fawned over.
“There was no signal in most of our taping locations in Sorsogon, so we couldn’t go online until we returned to our hotel. And then, we saw that fans were posting photos of us,” Mavy said in a recent virtual conference. “Kyline and I have formed a genuine bond. I’m glad that people are receiving our tandem warmly.”
Does the 20-year-old GMA 7 artist feel any pressure from passionate fans hoping to see their relationship blossom in real life?
“When they tease us, I just tease them back. It’s fun because I feel like I’m making friends with them. I don’t feel pressured. I’m more excited than anything. I look forward to seeing my chemistry with Ky onscreen,” he said. “The pressure, I guess, is related to work. But between us, it’s all just fun.”
The important thing, the 20-year-old artist said, is that he and Kyline are able to spread joy at a time people need it the most.
“I just want to make them happy and smile, especially these days. We want to spread as much positive energy as we can … Kinikilig sila, kinikilig din kami,” he said.
Though Kyline is a year younger than Mavy, she has had a more considerable experience in acting.
“She guided me, but not too much, because I have to learn on my own, too,” Mavy pointed out. “We always support each other.”
“I Left My Heart” gave Mavy a lot of firsts—first time working long-term outside Manila, first time away from the family, and first time working in a taping bubble.
That’s why things turned a bit emotional when he bid goodbye to his parents, Carmina Villaroel and Zoren Legaspi, and twin sister, Cassy.
Fun, challenging
“It was like they were sending off a college student about to study abroad,” he joked. “My mom was affected since we’re very close; I’m a mama’s boy. It was tough, but I was ready to spread my wings.”
Mavy started feeling anxious the day before he had to undergo preshoot quarantine.
“My nerves started to set in. But luckily, Cassy had already experienced a locked-in taping and gave me advice. She told me to just enjoy each day—that comes naturally when you love your job,” he said.
He described working on his first television series—which will be headlined by Heart Evangelista and Richard Yap—as fun and challenging.
“I was testing the waters and applying what I had been learning to my portrayal,” he said. “But working with the entire cast was super fun. I didn’t expect we would all become close on- and off-cam,” he added. “We all had the same goal in mind going into the project, so that made everything smooth.”
And while this was his first full soap, he wasn’t about to use it as an excuse for his mistakes. “That’s not an excuse for me not to do well. I’m hard on myself. Each mistake, I take to heart and learn from it. That’s because I want to prove to people rooting for me that I can do it, that I’m capable of more.”
The goal, he said, is to be a well-rounded artist. And he feels blessed that the Kapuso network has been giving him projects that allow him to do just that.
“We have done ‘All-Out Sundays,’ ‘Flex,’ ‘Sarap ‘Di Ba?’ … We had opportunities to hone our hosting, dancing, singing, acting skills. I love that we have a healthy environment that allows us to be more versatile; that lets us push ourselves and encourages us to be more independent.”
