Comedians Pokwang and Paolo Ballesteros, along with several of their neighbors in Antipolo, have put up a community pantry of their own.
Pokwang, whose real name is Marietta Subong, shared the news of their good deed via Instagram yesterday, April 23, and noted that it went well.
“Tagumpay ang aming #communitypantry ang #pantrysisters thank you sa mga [kapitbahay] ko sa pakikiisa at pakikipagtulungan @pochoy_29 [Ballesteros] @pjfuente [PJ Dela Fuente] @kikel_ [Mykel Sevilla] salamat sa inyo… basta alam nyo na sino sino kayo God bless,” Pokwang said.
(Our #communitypantry, the #pantrysisters, was a success. Thanks to my neighbors for their cooperation and help. Thank you Ballesteros, Dela Fuente and Sevilla.)
Their community pantry’s name, “Pantry Sisters,” is a play on the title of Ballesteros’ 2019 film “The Panti Sisters,” which was directed by Jun Lana.
A number of community pantries have sprouted all over Metro Manila and other parts of the country, which were all inspired by the first one set up by Ana Patricia Non on Maginhawa Street in Teachers Village, Quezon City.
Through these community pantries, citizens are given a platform to donate food and other necessities for the less fortunate and their families amid the pandemic-induced lockdown.
Non previously disclosed that volunteers like her were being subjected to alleged police profiling and red-tagging for their charitable initiative. She initially planned to shut down the Maginhawa Community Pantry over fears arising from the said police response, but later said on April 20 that they will continue operations instead.
Aside from Pokwang and Ballesteros, fellow celebrities Gabbi Garcia and Angel Locsin have also set up community pantries in different areas. /ra
