Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez expressed her dismay over the government’s way of handling the COVID-19 pandemic amid the recent surge in cases and deaths.
“Bakit parang pinabayan na lang tayo? Kanya kanya matira [matibay] ganon na lang ba talaga? People are dying people we know relatives [and] friends!” Velasquez posted on Twitter yesterday, April 9.
(Why does it feel like we have been abandoned? Are we to just care for ourselves and let the strong survive, is that it?)
“Every single day may nalalagas sa atin (Every single day, some of us die) [crying emoji] What’s happening??” she added.

Velasquez’s remark came as the country posted a record-high 401 deaths in a single day due to COVID-19 yesterday. The Department of Health (DOH) noted, however, that this number included deaths from as early as January that were only recently validated.
Today, April 10, the DOH reported 12,674 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases to 853,209, of which 190,245 are active. Another 225 fatalities were, meanwhile, recorded today, bringing the total of COVID-19 deaths to 14,744.
A total of 593 patients recovered from the disease, pushing the total number of recoveries to 648,220 as of today.
Velasquez is just one of many celebrities who have been criticizing the government’s COVID-19 response, including Ogie Diaz, Bullet Dumas and Juan Miguel Severo, among others. /ra
