KUALA LUMPUR — Pilot Derek Mackesy has won the talent contest, See Me Fly Again, aimed at offering airline staff an alternative career as actors.

Mackesy is a captain who has served for 10 years at the Hong Kong airliner, Cathay Dragon, before it ceased operations last October.

The 34-year-old – who began studying to be a pilot at 16 – beat out 14 other finalists to win the contest, organized by Hong Kong broadcaster TVB.

“I’d like to thank TVB for the opportunity and for giving us a chance to take this next step in life,” he said after his win. Mackesy will now stand a chance to star in TVB dramas.

Keith Shing, 30, a pilot of four years, placed second while 28-year-old air steward of four years, Godwin Luk, took third place.

The finals of the competition took place on Dec 26.

The contestants were tested in a variety of ways including an interview portion, an acting challenge as well as a talent segment.
