‘Fan Girl’ bags MMFF 2020 Best Picture award

MANILA, Philippines — Dark fantasy movie “Fan Girl” has come out of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Awards Night as the biggest winner, securing the Best Picture Award while lead stars Paulo Avelino and Charlize Dizon and director Antonette Jadaone bagged individual plums.

During the MMFF Gabi ng Parangal held remotely on Sunday, the film has Avelino portraying himself with Dizon as a fangirl. The film also bagged the coveted Best Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography awards.

The movie received critical acclaim for taking on a controversial subject: The obsession of fans with celebrities and actresses.

In the movie, Dizon’s character becomes obsessed with actor Avelino.

In her speech after accepting the award, Jadaone said that she hoped the movie could be an eye-opener for adults on properly raising Filipino children, especially girls in this modern age.

“I hope we always conscious of raising our youth and women in a freedom-loving Philippines, always thinking that they are the future of the country, and that we older people should be the ones to guide these young people into the right path,” Jadaone said in Filipino.

Aside from “Fan Girl,” “Magikland” also bagged several awards, including the Best Visual Effects.

  • Best Visual Effects/ Best Production Design/ Best Musical Score – “Magikland”
  • Best Original Theme Song – “The Boy Foretold by the Stars”
  • Cultural Award – “Suarez: The Healing Priest”
  • Gender Sensitivity Award – “The Boy Foretold by the Stars”
  • Best Child Performer – Seiyo Masunaga in “The Missing”
  • Best Supporting Actress – Shaina Magdayao in “Tagpuan”
  • Best Supporting Actor – Michael de Mesa in “Isa Pang Bahaghari”
