Julia Barretto gains support of fellow celebs, fans in filing complaint

Julia Barretto has gained massive support from fellow celebrities and fans alike just a few hours after she filed criminal complaints against Jay Sonza, who posted pregnancy rumors about her online.

Barretto went to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Division at around 11 a.m. today, Sept. 25, to formally file the complaints of cyber libel and violation of the Safe Spaces Act against the former broadcaster.

“Jay Sonza” and “Julia Barretto” have since gone trending on Twitter Philippines as netizens pour their support for the actress, commending her for standing up to Sonza.

Bianca Gonzales, for one, thanked both Barretto and Liza Soberano–who likewise filed a complaint yesterday, Sept. 24, over a netizen’s rape remark–for being brave.

“Thank you @lizasoberano and @barrettojulia for being brave and standing up for what you believe in, showing other women that you can fight for your boundaries, and there is a difference between a negative comment and an abusive comment. We stand by you,” she tweeted earlier today.

Health reform advocate Dr. Tony Leachon agreed to Gonzalez’s sentiments, replying to the tweet, “It takes a lot of moral courage to stand up for what’s right. I admire people with convictions and principles.”

“If we don’t stand up for all that is right, then understand that we are part of the reason why there is so much wrong in the world. We support Liza and Julia,” the doctor added.

Actor and poet Juan Miguel Severo likewise showed his support for Barretto, tweeting, “I love it when women fight back. Go get him, @barrettojulia.”

News anchor Karen Davila also expressed her support for Barretto, tweeting, “After Liza Soberano, Julia Barretto stands up for herself [fisted hand emoji].”

Aika Robredo, daughter of Vice President Leni Robredo, echoed Davila’s sentiments and tweeted “First, Liza Soberano. Now, Julia Barretto [raised fist emoji].”

Hundreds of netizens have also shown their support for Barretto. For one, entertainment blogger Rod Magaru tweeted that “Julia Barretto filing a case against fake news spreader Jay Sonza is the best news today.”

His tweet came with screenshots of Sonza’s Facebook status where he claimed that Barretto is pregnant with Gerald Anderson’s child and the Instagram post of Barretto debunking the claim.

Another Twitter user with the handle @chicwlsn also shared his thoughts, commending both Soberano and Barretto for respectively filing complaints against the rape remark and Sonza “who is a fake news enabler and proud DDS.”

Sonza has since deleted his Facebook post claiming Barretto is pregnant and posted a new status where he said, “Pasensiya kung napaaga ang aking congratulations (I am sorry if my congratulations were too early).”  /ra
