Ice Seguerra sees brighter side of dad’s illness: ‘It brought our family closer’

MANILA, Philippines — Despite challenges brought by his father’s illness, singer Ice Seguerra saw the bright side of it all as his family developed a stronger bond and openness with each other.

“Siguro, if there’s one thing na magandang binigay sa amin ang cancer ni Daddy; it brought us closer as a family,” Seguerra said in an Instagram post Wednesday.

(Maybe if there’s one good thing we got from daddy’s cancer was that it brought us closer us a family.)

It was in March when Seguerra first disclosed that his father was battling prostate cancer.

“Kami kasi yung tipong pamilyang non-confrontational. Lahat dinadaan sa biro. But like all families, there were unspoken things and old wounds that need to be mended,” he added.

(We are the non-confrontational type of family. Everything is said in jest. But like all families, there were unspoken things and old wounds that need to be mended.)

It was “awkward” to open up to each other at first, Seguerra admitted, but things changed after they talked more among themselves.

“Yes, may iyakan nagkalabasan nang mga sama ng loob sa isa’t isa. We all took turns, my dad, mama, and my brother. After that, pinatawad namin ang isa’t isa at ang mga sarili namin,” Seguerra said.

“We became more open, expressive, more understanding of each other’s pain and journey. We hug each other more, give kisses spontaneously. We are happier,” he went on.

Seguerra then shared his realization that an opportunity will come to “mend broken or strained relationships.”

“You just have to be mindful and seize that opportunity when it presents itself to you,” he said.
