MANILA, Philippines — Jennylyn Mercado, who was among those who tuned in to President Rodrigo Duterte’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, could not help but comment when the chief executive asked for the cooperation of Filipinos in fighting the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“Okay. But what’s the plan?” the actress said in Filipino on Twitter.

As of this writing, the Philippines has 82,040 COVID-19 cases, with 1,945 deaths and 26,446 recoveries.
In his address, Duterte laid down several government measures to aid Filipinos amid the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the continuation of the social amelioration program.
He also said that the government would intensify its assistance to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) .
In another tweet, Mercado stressed that the role of the government is “to promote the welfare of this country whatever the situation we are in.”

“That is why any progress or any positive action that they did does not need praise because that is their job,” the actress added in Filipino.
Instead of praising the government, Mercado gave recognition to the “new heroes” — the doctors, nurses, teachers, soldiers and other frontliners.
“We salute you. Thank you very much,” she said.
