For Vice Ganda, the decision to have a child of his own is not just a matter of having the means to do it.

The comedian explained his choice to be child-free in an episode of “It’s Showtime” on Monday, July 6, stating that he did not want his potential child to suffer from cruelty.

The discussion came about during the singing contest “Tawag ng Tanghalan” while he and co-host Vhong Navarro were interviewing a gay contestant.

The contestant has two kids and said he was open about his same-sex partner.

This prompted Vice to commend him and others in the LGBTQ+ community who are raising a family.

(To all the LGBTQ+ who have families and are supporting a family, and are successful in being a family, congratulations to you. I salute you because I cannot imagine your courage and capabilities, since I am not capable of doing so.)

Vice said he always gets asked if he will have a child and explained his hesitations about having one.

(I said if I think of my capacity, I can say that I can have one. But I do not want to expose whoever will be my child to the cruelty of the world.)

He said he could handle the cruelty, but would not want a child to go through it.

(But the kid, I cannot completely think of the difficulties of my child when the bad treat them unkindly, right?)

He stressed that he would rather go through the suffering on his own.

(Let it be me [who suffers], it’s OK that I am alone, even if I have no kid, as long as the kid I will potentially have will not suffer.)
