Broadway actor Nick Cordero has awoken from a weeks-long coma as he fights the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
His wife, Amanda Kloots, who is a dancer and fitness entrepreneur, announced her husband’s progress on Tuesday, May 12, via Instagram Stories.
“I asked the doctor today, ‘Can we say he is awake?'” she said while holding Elvis, their 11-month-old son. “He is awake!”
“Nick is starting to follow commands and doing simple tracking!!!!! He is very weak so even just opening his eyes is a struggle, but it is happening,” she said in an Instagram post on the same day.
“He is starting to wake up!! We are by no means out of the woods yet, there are still concerns with other things, but this news today on his mental status is a win!!”
Cordero fell ill in March and has been hospitalized at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The actor is in the city for a production of “Rock of Ages.”
He has been in the intensive care unit since March 31 and was put in a medically induced coma the next day.
His right leg was amputated due to a blood clot, which was one of the complications arising from the virus. His wife has also said that his lungs were severely damaged.
Cordero starred in Broadway’s “Waitress” and “A Bronx Tale,” and was nominated for a Tony award for his performance in “Bullets over Broadway.” /ra
