As the number of novel coronavirus confirmed cases swelled this week, citizens are apparently “panic buying” soap and rubbing alcohol in grocery stores, according to radio jock Czarina Balba (DJ Cha Cha).

DJ Cha Cha addressed the “panic buying” and alcohol “hoarding” on her Twitter account yesterday, March 10.

“Sa mga nagpa-panic buying ng Alcohol at Sabon… So malinis na malinis ka at ang pamilya mo pero dahil inubos mo yung supply sa grocery, paano yung ibang tao?” she said. “Mas lalo lang lalala ang Virus na yan kung masyado kang selfish at walang pake sa kapakanan ng iba.”

(To those who are panic buying alcohol and soap: you and your family will be sanitized. But because you wiped out the supply in the grocery, how about other people? This virus will only get worse if you’re too selfish and you don’t care about others’ well-being.)

The radio personality also stated that some people are purchasing alcohol to sell it at a higher price online.

“Sa ganitong panahon mas dapat nagtutulungan kaysa isahan mo yung kapwa mo. Wag ganyan ses (In times like this, we should be helping instead of taking advantage of each other. Don’t be like that sis)!” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health declared that there are 33 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country as of Tuesday, March 10. Test kits for the said virus, which are being developed by local scientists at the University of the Philippines, have also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). JB
