It’s been 11 days since the “secret wedding” of Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli, yet it’s still a hot topic because of the colorful subplots.
Sarah’s bodyguard, Jerry Tamara, claims that Matteo punched him for squealing about the wedding to Sarah’s Mommy Divine. In show biz circles, it’s an open secret that she’s not too keen on Sarah’s relationship with Matteo. She ought to do a version of her daughter’s hit “Tala” and call it “Hala.”
On the other hand, the spiritual counselor of the newlyweds, Letty Fuentes, clarified that it was Mommy Divine who caused a commotion when she gatecrashed the reception. In her “TV Patrol” interview, Letty said, “Matteo did not hurt the bodyguard. Mommy Divine wanted to slap Matteo and called him, “Traydor.”
Sarah intervened, but her mom pushed her away, so all she could do was cry. If I were to coin a hashtag for the “after-nuptials drama,” it would be “#AshMatt didn’t AskMa.”
I am more inclined to believe the story of Letty. Born-again Christians like her shy away from controversy. That’s why I understand why Pastor Paolo Punzalan (who officiated the controversial wedding) refused to comment on the issue when I asked his sis, Princess, to relay my request for an interview. But Letty took it upon herself to come to Matteo’s defense.
Jerry was just doing his job. But for him to insist that he got punched by the groom is a desperate attempt to put Matteo in a bad light. The Kapamilya star is such a mild-mannered guy. It’s unthinkable that he would flare up on the happiest day of his life.
Sarah has been working like a horse as the breadwinner of her family all these years. No wonder she broke down during one of her shows abroad due to “burnout.” She’s no robot, après tout. I told her during our interview last July, “You should spoil yourself on your birthday.”
The idea seemed alien to her. She has always put her family first. So, now at 31, the Pop Princess more than deserves to make her “happily ever after” with Matteo a priority. It’s high time the dutiful daughter turns into a devoted wife.
When news about their engagement broke out, I asked Matteo’s mom Glenna for her sentiments about it. She said that it would be better if I ask Matteo, instead. It only goes to show that Glenna doesn’t meddle in her son’s life, but supports his decisions. Matteo’s happiness is hers, as well.
Hopefully in due time, Mommy Divine will do the same. She should not worry who her daughter loves more, her or Matteo, because Sarah has loved her and their family longer. At this point of their lives, Divine should not be too much of a mother to be a friend to Sarah.
The lyrics of Sarah’s hit song “Tala” is so apt for their “against-all-odds” love story.
