Netizens sent the social networking site Twitter abuzz on Friday, moments after news broke that “American Idol” contestant Jessica Sanchez got the lowest votes in the competition.

“Jessica Sanchez” became a top trending topic worldwide after the 16-year-old Filipino-Mexican singer was saved from elimination by “Idol” judges Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler.

Sanchez took to her Twitter account to thank her supporters: “I’m trending worldwide? Wow. You guys really are amazing. Thank you! Love you so much!”

A favorite in the competition, Twitter users expressed their gratitude that the judges decided to use their lone “save” for Sanchez.

“So happy that judges used their option to save Jessica Sanchez. She’s really a great singer,” wrote beauty queen Miriam Quiambao.

“Tama ang judges (The judges were right). She is one of the best singers in America. The way Jessica Sanchez was saved by the judges was really heartwarming,” posted musician Jim Paredes.

“All my US followers, please vote for Jessica Sanchez. There will never be anyone like her. Ever,” tweeted Kim Atienza, who has over one million followers.

Theories that the shocking results were a ploy for ratings were also posted on Twitter.

User @adrianalvarrez tweeted: “I am not buying it. It’s all for the show, for the ratings. I don’t think people would just ignore voting Jessica Sanchez on ‘Idol.’ Oh, well.”

Some users, meanwhile, decided to tweet jokes about how Sanchez was almost sent packing.

Blogger Professional Heckler jested: “‘American Idol’ is more shocking than Kim Jong-un,” referring to the North Korean leader.

Tweeted comedian John Lapus: “Nag Holy Week vacay pala ang mga Pinoy at Mexicano kaya mababa ang votes ni Jessica Sanchez. Pwes humanda na sila (Filipinos and Mexicans were on a Holy Week vacation that’s why votes were low. They should get ready now).”

Sanchez sang Jazmine Sullivan’s “Stuttering” before the elimination night.

Sullivan, impressed with Sanchez’s rendition, posted on her Twitter account: “Just saw the J. Sanchez performance from last night and she killed! So honored she chose my song! Thanks mamaz and good luck!” Inquirer Research
