LOS ANGELES—We were interviewing Dylan and Paris Brosnan the day before the Globes, where they were going to appear as this year’s Golden Globe Ambassadors. Who would show up, videotaping his sons being interviewed but Pierce Brosnan himself?
“It’s so nice that he came out,” Paris said when we asked about the A-lister suddenly around. “He’s always showing up at stuff for us. Even if I have a runway show in London or somewhere in Europe, he comes, watches and sits. He is a proud dad, I love it.”
“Yeah, it’s always great to see him there,” said Dylan, who has the long hair.
Excerpts from our chat:
What was it like growing up as the son of Pierce Brosnan?
Dylan (D): It was incredibly normal. He’s a great guy, and a great dad.
Were you aware that he’s a star?
D: Yeah, of course. I don’t think it was something that we focused on growing up, but it was awesome and very exciting to grow up on film sets and travel with him. It was such a great opportunity.
So you traveled a lot with him?
D: Yeah, I remember being there on the James Bond sets and what not, early on.
Do you see yourself in the entertainment world?
Paris (P): We are both in film school right now. Dylan is graduating at USC; I am a freshman at LMU. We are both studying film production. And I have been working with a brand called Clarins and Feed to do documentary-style filmmaking.
So I am aspiring to do that and be behind the lens and work in all fields of productions and behind the scenes editing and doing cinematography. And I had Dylan help out with the score for a short film I did.
D: Yeah, I worked on his documentary that he did for Clarins and Feed, so I did a score for that. I am a musician, so I play here in LA. I sing and write songs. I am working on a record right now. And I have also done some work with director Thom Zimny on his most recent project, which was the Bruce Springsteen movie, “Western Stars.”
Have you thought of an acting career?
D: I wouldn’t say no, but I think we are both open to whatever the future holds.
P: Both open to it, yeah.
Can you share something about your dad that is not known by the public?
P: I wouldn’t say that people don’t know it, but he’s a really passionate painter and artist. He’s been working countless hours in a studio to paint. That’s where he sees his career going in the near future. He wants to have an exhibit in a gallery.
D: I was going to say the same as Paris. I don’t think it’s a secret, but his passion for painting and his skill are incredible. We are excited to see where he goes with that.
What trait do you share with your dad?
D: I’d say artistry. Calm demeanor. When it’s me and dad, it’s very calm and civilized. We get along really well.
Any downsides to having Pierce Brosnan as your dad?
D: I don’t think of it as having downsides. Growing up, I was always proud that he was my dad. I didn’t want to hide it, but I wouldn’t tell everyone.
P: Exactly. I grew up in Malibu and went to school with Cindy Crawford’s son. I went to school with so many actors’ kids, so I think it was just normal.
D: I think if we had grown up somewhere different…
P: I don’t think a lot of people cared, to be honest. But it was definitely cool, dad was cool. People thought it was cool, too.
What’s the best advice that your dad gave you?
P: I remember him dropping us off at school every morning, going, “Be bold, be great.” He would give us a morning pep talk.
Every morning?
D: Yeah, close to every morning.
P: “Be bold, be great, boys!”
D: More often than not (laughs).
P: Like, “Love life! Get out there!”
D: Yeah, “Just enjoy it.”
P: He’s very inspirational, very supportive.
