Chaplin cane, Superman suit under Hollywood hammer

LOS ANGELES – Charlie Chaplin’s iconic cane, a “Superman” costume and a vintage Christian Dior gown worn by Princess Diana are among Hollywood treasures being sold at auction this weekend.

The “Hollywood Legends” sale also includes earrings worn by Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston in the 1992 film “Bodyguard,” as well as other items which once belonged to the the star who died in February aged 48.

Clark Gable’s riding jacket from “Gone With The Wind” – estimated value $10,000-$15,000 – and Charlton Heston screen robe, staff and tablets from “The Ten Commandments” will go under the hammer too.

Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills will also be selling Richard Gere’s hat from “An Officer and a Gentleman,” as well as a Chaplin suit and a number of the black-and-white icon’s belongings such as his drivers license.

A Superheros section of the sale will include a Christopher Reeve costume from “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace,” estimated at $20-30,000, and a complete Batman costume from “Batman Returns.”

The Whitney Houston items are the first to be sold publicly since her shock death in February – coincidentally just down the road from the auction house in the nearby Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“This will be, in fact, the first auction of items owned by Whitney Houston that will go on the auction block since she passed away,” Julien’s Auctions Executive Director Martin Nolan told ABC News Radio.

“So the world media – in fact, everyone – is curious to know just how collectible she has become,” he added.
