MANILA, Philippines – Chito Roño’s “Signal Rock” and Kip Oebanda’s “Liway” received the most nods with nine each at the Film Academy of the Philippines’ (FAP) 37th Luna Awards.
Both films are vying for awards such as Best Motion Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematography, among others.
“Signal Rock’s” Christian Bables earned a nomination as Best Actor, while “Liway’s” Glaiza de Castro earned a nomination as Best Actress.
“Signal Rock” tells the story of Intoy (Bables) who looks after his family in Biri, Samar and has to go to strange rock formations on an island to communicate with his sister overseas. The film won the 2018 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) Special Jury Prize and Critics’ Choice.
“Liway,” which is set during the Martial Law era, tells the story of Dakip (Kenken Nuyad) who was born in a detention cell.
It was an entry at the 2019 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival which won the Audience Award in the Main Competition and the Special Jury Commendation.
Other top contenders in this year’s Luna Awards are Erik Matti’s “BuyBust” starring Anne Curtis and Jerrold Tarog’s “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” starring Paulo Avelino, both receiving eight nominations.
Meanwhile, the late veteran actor Eddie Garcia was also nominated for Best Actor in his movie “Rainbow’s Sunset” which also stars Gloria Romero and the late theater legend Tony Mabesa.
The 37th Luna Awards awards night will take place on November 30, 2019 at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.
