Charli XCX’s new single “February 2017” was dropped yesterday, Sept. 7, a week ahead of the release of her new album, “Charli”, due on Sept. 13.
The synth-drenched track includes guest contributions from pop songwriter Clairo and Korean-American house producer Yaeji, with whom Charli XCX previously collaborated with for a remix of “Focus”.
It also features production from British singer-producer AG Cook and French trio Planet 1999.
“February 2017” centers on Charli XCX reflecting on a past relationship, apologizing for breaking down her significant other.
“Hope you can forgive all of my crimes/You read but won’t reply/I just need your reply/I feel like crying/Baby, all I need’s a single night,” she sings with Clairo, over twinkling synths. As the tempo morphs towards the end of the song, Yaeji jumps in with her verses in Korean.
In a statement, Charli XCX said that “collaborating with Yaeji and Clairo was really fun and unique.”
“We are all very different artists but coming together on this song felt so special and right. These two women are really kind, talented and brilliant. I enjoy both of their music so much. I’m happy we have this song together,” she added, calling the collaboration “one of the most intimate moments on the album.”
“February 2017” marks the sixth single to come from “Charli”, following the previously issued “Warm”, “1999”, “Blame It on Your Love”, “Gone” and “Cross You Out”.
The album features guest artists Troye Sivan, Lizzo, Sky Ferreira, Brooke Candy and Big Freedia, among others.
Last June, Charli XCX announced a world tour in support of her “Charli” album, which will bring her through Europe, Canada and the United States.
She will embark on the North American leg of the tour later this month, kicking it off on Sept. 20 at Georgia’s Buckhead Theater in Atlanta, U.S. RGA/JB
