While social media has become an indispensable tool for many artists, pop star Shawn Mendes said he didn’t have either Instagram or Twitter installed in his phone at the moment, because it helped to step back from all the online noise once in a while.
“I also struggle with social media a lot,” he said in a Q&A session before his recent show in Atlanta. “To be honest with you, guys, I deleted Instagram and Twitter … but I send my manager pictures, and I’m like, ‘Can you post this?’”
For the Canadian singer-songwriter—who’s no stranger to online bashing—taking a break from social media can be a form of self-care.
“Sometimes, I need to take a break from it, because it gets to me just as much as it gets to anyone else,” the “In My Blood” singer admitted. “You have to take care of yourself.”
His rumored girlfriend, Camila Cabello, shares the same sentiments. The former Fifth Harmony member, who has a single with Shawn titled “Señorita,” said she had to use her mother’s phone if she were to personally check on her accounts.
“I try to protect myself as much as I can. I don’t have any social media on my phone. I have it on my mom’s phone, so if there’s anything I want to say or if I want to read what my fans are sending me, I can,” she told Cosmopolitan magazine. “It has made a world of difference.” —ALLAN POLICARPIO
