WATCH: Sharon Cuneta, Cherie Gil switch roles to re-create classic scene from ‘Bituing Walang Ninging’

Sharon Cuneta and Cherie Gil had a rare and cheerful reunion on Saturday, July 13 as they had dinner together. Joining them were Cuneta’s kids Frankie, Miel and Miguel.

Inevitably, they reminisced on their iconic roles in the 1985 drama “Bituing Walang Ningning”. Cuneta played Dorina, a fangirl built up to topple her singing idol Lavinia, portrayed by Gil.

The film is known for the classic line that Lavinia says when she snaps at Dorina, along with a splash of water from a glass: “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat.”

In real life, Cuneta and Gil are dear friends rather than rivals, as seen in their pictures during the dinner. In one picture, they re-created a photo from their younger years where they are locked in an embrace.

Of course, they attempted to remake the “copycat” confrontation scene, but with the roles reversed. A video which Cuneta posted on YouTube shows that they did multiple takes as her kids directed them.

Initially, Gil wanted sake or iced tea in a glass to make the scene more realistic, but Cuneta refused. They also agreed that the Megastar was too sweet to seem like a kontrabida. After a handful of takes, they finally got the scene right, which Gil posted on Instagram.

“Thank you for being the best friend ever,” Cuneta wrote. “And for being game always and for a wonderful evening and for your lovely children and for the gift of you and your big heart!”

Cuneta shared the love back with a picture of them.

“Your Dorina and Lavinia,” Cuneta said. “Friends forever!!!” JB
