How comedy boosted JC’s confidence

JC de Vera

Actor JC de Vera has been tickling viewers’ funny bones in ABS-CBN’s gag show “Banana Sundae,” but he said he never thought he would end up being a comedian when he was just starting out in the biz.

“I only became open to [being a comedian] when I moved to ABS,” JC told Inquirer Entertainment in an interview in Lucena, Quezon, recently, where he participated in the town’s annual Flores de Mayo parade.

“Back then, I was thinking of ways to make myself different from other leading men,” continued JC, who was also joined by fellow Kapamilya star Alex Gonzaga in the out-of-town gig, along with actress Erich Gonzales, “PBB” alumnus Fourth Pagotan, and former Mister Chinatown runnerup Wryan Chua.

He said there are actors who are afraid of doing comedy and looking silly onscreen. In his case, “there were a few adjustments, but I had no fear.”

For JC, being a gag show mainstay has in fact amped up his credentials, making him an all-around actor who can do drama, action and comedy. “In my career, I try to do anything,” he shared.

JC said “Banana Sundae” has taught him not to take everything too seriously. “Instead of feeling disappointed over something, I crack jokes and laugh more often now,” he said. “I know how to just laugh things off.”

And this, he said, is what the world needs right now.

“With so many things happening in our country and in the whole world, laughter is one of the things that [may help] solve our problems. Just enjoy life,” JC said.

Aside from the weekly daytime gag show, JC is also seen weeknights on “The General’s Daughter” with Angel Locsin.
