Director Erik Matti has shared just how much work was involved when it came to the “hidden” visual effects of his horror-mystery film “Kuwaresma,” which hit Philippine theaters last May 15.
A lot of his films do not get noticed for their visual effects, as per Matti’s post via Instagram last May 18. In his 2018 thriller action film “BuyBust,” for example, Matti said they only probably had one visual effect every five shots. “Kuwaresma” is different, however, and saw Matti’s team employ many visual effects in creating the film’s monster.
“In #Kuwaresma, we employed a lot of visual effects,” he said. “We had a man in a demon suit made of silicone and latex wearing [the] most basic structure and look of our monster. Then we digitally redesigned it adding textures and exaggerated horns and hairs bulking it up to look like a 10ft devil Hulk Hogan.”
Matti added there were many fights and debates when it came to the effects, but said it all came out great in the end. He then challenged his fans to try to count the visual effects in the film, some of which look ostensibly ordinary.
“Count it,” he said. “You’ll be surprised at how many there are that looked too ordinary to be considered a computer visual effect.”
“Kuwaresma,” which was filmed in Baguio, is top-billed by John Arcilla and Megastar Sharon Cuneta, a project that showed the veteran actress in a different light. /ra
