Groundbreaking challenge for ‘Nawawala’ filmmaker

Marie Jamora

Marie Jamora, the filmmaker behind the Cinemalaya-winning drama “Ang Nawawala” (What Isn’t There), is setting her sights on a groundbreaking challenge—and she could use our help.

She’s the first Filipino to qualify for the AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW), a program committed to increasing the number of female directors working in Hollywood. Its alumnae include Maya Angelou, Cicely Tyson and Ellen Burstyn.

As part of DWW, Marie is making “A Song for Myself”—a short film that chronicles the struggles and celebrates the triumphs of overseas Filipino musicians as it focuses on the story of a hotel cover band in Vegas. Marie is crowdsourcing by way of SeedandSpark, and she needs all the help she can get to raise its $30,000 budget. Please go to seedandspark.com/fund/asongformyself and make a pledge. —RITO P. ASILO
