MANILA, Philippines — Singer-songwriter Iñigo Pascual has teamed up with Australia’s biggest Youtube star Wengie in a new single titled “Mr. Nice Guy.”
Iñigo Pascual and Wengie posed for the media during a briefing on their single at the ELJ Communications Center in Quezon City on Wednesday.
Wengie, an Australian-Chinese video blogger with more than 13 million subscribers, shared how this project unexpectedly came about.
“It was actually really lucky because I’m from Australia, Inigo’s from the Philippines, and for some reason, we were in LA at the same time, and it just all matched up,” Wengie said. “So we decided to record and I’m like ‘Perfect! Let’s record!’”
The project came about after ABS-CBN Star Music head Marivic Benedicto and Wengie’s manager, Danny Lee, met months ago.
“He [Lee] was looking for an artist whom Wengie can collaborate with. We sent a list of artists and he chose Iñigo,” Benedicto said.
Wengie said she was aiming to channel a K-pop duo when her manager first showed her Pascual: “When Danny showed me Iñigo, I had this vision for this project where I wanted to do like a K-pop male-female duet kind of thing. The girl raps and the boy sings really nicely so it was perfect. His voice is like an angel.”
Meanwhile, Pascual admitted how the collaboration still have not sunk in to him just yet.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Pascual said. “All the stuff that we’ve done in the States, the collaboration we were able to do while we were at LA. I still can’t believe it’s all happening so fast.”
The 21-year-old Pascual pointed out how this collaboration had a perfect timing since he was aiming to create an album slated for an international release.
“We were trying to build my album for the international release and this is a really, really, I think a big project for me, at least. And it was really special to do it and, like I said, the whole experience, the whole process, it was really easy to work with the team,” he said.
The single, set for release this April, has three versions — English, Tagalog and Taglish.
Wengie is known for her singles “Oh I Do,” “Deja Vu,” and “Cake.”
Pascual, on the other hand, popularized songs like “Dahil Sa’Yo” and “Lumang Tugtugin,” among others. /atm
