The onset of Lent is a signal for most Filipinos to start planning their long vacation. But what about taking time out to do some self-introspection?
In a deeper sense, “Lent” can also mean that we’re living on borrowed time. So we ought to be less worldly.
I asked some celebrities what they are giving up for Lent. Our little sacrifices are nothing when we think about the sufferings Jesus endured for us. I don’t mean to sound preachy but we all need some spiritual awakening once in awhile.
Let Lent make a dent.
SHALANI SOLEDAD-ROMULO: “I’m a late sleeper so this Lent I’ll be sleeping early and waking up at 7 a.m.”
GLORIA DIAZ: “Bread and sweets.”
DEREK RAMSAY: “No alcohol [for me].”
KARYLLE: “I’m giving up going to chismis websites just like I did last year. It’s horrible. I’m so chismosa.”
OGIE ALCASID: “I’m abstaining from alcohol and eating very light.”
AMY PEREZ: “I usually refrain from watching TV during Lent and do the three R’s with my family — relax, reflect and revive.”
MIRIAM QUIAMBAO: “I’m giving up fear, which blocks me from trusting, loving and living life to the fullest.”
MR. FU: “I have been trying to avoid white rice for weeks, as part of my diet, but I would like to be consistent with my sacrifice. So this Lent, no white rice. Nakapag-diet na, nakapagsakripisyo pa. Lalabanan ko si Kim Chiu sa pagpapapayat. May ganun?”
POKWANG: “I’m giving up my love life for Lent kasi mas bongga ang bigay ni God na love. Kaya okay lang na tumanda ako ng walang jowa kasi love ako ni God.”
BUBBLES PARAISO: “I’m giving up wine. Last Lent I gave up chocolates.”
