Singers Reuben Laurente and Arman Ferrer, who will stage the Valentine’s Day show, “Silver Lining,” talk about the love songs closest to their hearts:
Reuben. One such song for me is “You’re My Home.” Given the chance, I would have stayed and pursued a career here in the Philippines. But things didn’t go the way I wanted. So, I had to look for opportunities outside the country and tried my luck on cruise ships. I got to see the world while doing the thing I was most passionate about.
I want to show the Filipino audience what I can do … because this is my home.
Arman. “Giliw,” which was originally recorded by Martin Nievera, is a great song. When we reached out to the composer, Noel Gamboa, we found out that it was actually intended to be a “kundiman.” And it connected to me all the more, because of my background in classical music. I hope to do my own version—a mix of classical and pop.
I also love “Portrait of my Love.” The last lines go: “It would take I know, a Michelangelo / And he would need the glow of dawn that paints the sky above / To try and paint a portrait of my love.” For someone to be able to say that … one can only imagine how overpowering his love is for that special someone. —ALLAN POLICARPIO
