One of the heroes getting the live-action treatment in the new “Titans” show is Jason Todd, the second Robin and Dick Grayson’s replacement.

Curran Walters, who plays Jason, told Entertainment Weekly of his inclusion, “You get a backstory of what they mean to each other and what they’ve been through.”

Like in the comics, both became Batman’s protégés and sidekicks. Portraying the younger, easygoing teen hero, Walters didn’t have any live-action predecessor, which made the job less daunting.

“When you’re the first to play it, you don’t have anything to play off … there’s freedom in that way,” says Walters, a former teen model.

Still, the 21-year-old actor had to be careful with the character: “Of course, there’s pressure from the fans. They’re so invested in what the comics have on Jason Todd that they expect you to do it a certain way, but I think I brought a great portrayal of my own.”

He recounted some disconnection to the role, initially, but eventually got in the zone. “I really didn’t feel like Robin until I put on the costume, especially the chest plate,” he disclosed. “I think it’s so cool that you’re bringing [comic book] history to life.”—OLIVER PULUMBARIT
