MANILA, Philippines — Singer Moira dela Torre has spoken out against body shaming following an incident where she was called names by a rude spectator during a year-end concert.

“There are so many people, mostly girls, who already go thru so much insecurity with their physical appearance. It’s a daily battle to get up and remind themselves they are beautiful,” Dela Torre said in a tweet on Wednesday.

She added, “Sometimes, we feel brave. Sometimes, the lies are louder. Nonetheless, we need to know we aren’t alone to be able to keep going.”

The 25-year-old singer pointed out, “Wouldn’t it be so much better if people encouraged instead of pointing out things to shame you?”

Dela Torre explained how some people gain “weight they didn’t really want” because of varying reasons like “self-control, hormonal imbalance, stress eating, other medical reasons, etc.”

“So when someones tries to connect being fat with being ugly, I have to correct that because it is wrong. Not only is it wrong, it is hurtful,” she emphasized.

Dela Torre recently revealed being called “taba” and “panget” while she was performing at a gig in Marikina City last Dec. 29.

“To the rude kuya shouting ‘ang taba mo laki mo moira panget taba’ while i was performing last night..i was so tempted to look at you & give you a piece of my mind. But i didnt want anyone feeling how you made me feel,” she said in a tweet on Monday.

She further said, “Women are beautiful whatever size and may i be the last person you disrespect like that. May you learn to love yourself enough that you won’t need to bring people down just to feel ‘funny’ or important.”

Dela Torre ended her post by reminding to “use a little kindness” because this “can stop the cycle of bullying or hiding unnecessary comments under ‘constructive criticism.’”

She pointed out, “Because constructive criticism should aim only to build people up.” /cbb
