Christmas tends to be an opportune time for children to knock on the doors of their godparents for either a gift or an envelope of cash. But what happens when a godparent does not have money or gifts prepared? For comedian Ogie Diaz, coming clean to one’s godchildren is better than hiding from them during Christmas.
Diaz, as usual, was candid in his latest installment of “Mama Ogs Says” on Facebook last Monday, Dec. 24. He revealed he has a lot of godchildren and that his daughters also have a lot of godparents.
When he was asked for a piece of advice on how to hide from one’s godchildren, the comedian said it is better to be upfront that one does not have money or gifts to give.
“So kung wala kang pambigay na regalo o aginaldo, sabihin mo ang totoo kesa takasan mo (So if you don’t have a gift or cash to give, tell them the truth rather than hide from them),” Diaz wrote. He also has a suggestion for godparents with godchildren all grown up: tag them on a Facebook post apologizing for the lack of gifts or money.
“Maging totoo na lang, kesa mangutang ka para lang magpabida sa mga inaanak mo,” he added, sharing a solution for godparents who really want to give something to their godchildren. “Pangakuan mo na lang na magreregalo ka sa birthday niya, tutal, hindi naman magkaka-birthday ang mga inaanak mo.”
(Opt to remain honest instead of borrowing money so you can show off to your godchildren. Just promise him/her that you will give a gift on his/her birthday since your godchildren do not celebrate the same birthdate anyway.)
“Kung walang-wala, magpakatotoo,” Diaz reminded godparents. “Kung meron, ‘wag magdamot. Hindi naman araw-araw ang Pasko.”
(If [you are] really broke, be honest. If [you are not], do not be selfish. Christmas, after all, is not every day.) JB
