Broadcasting network TV5 commissioned Emmy-nominated director/cinematographer Robert Goodman to conduct workshops on high-definition production for its engineers and crew.
Goodman wrote the “Goodman’s Guide” series, which helps engineers comprehend complicated HD camera manuals. For the past 20 years, he has been contributing editor of “The Independent Film and Video Monthly,” “Broadcast Television,” “Videography” and “DV.” He has also written for “American Cinematographer,” “DOX” and other industry publications.
The four-day training was held at the TV5 studios in Novaliches, Quezon City. Chief information technology officer Benjie Fernandez said the workshops were necessary because TV5 bought new HD cameras early this year. “It isn’t enough to buy technology; we should also prepare the people who will operate it,” Fernandez told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Goodman tackled HD technology in relation to set design, lighting, makeup and even costumes, Fernandez reported. “He attempted to answer questions like ‘What do you do in post-production?’ ‘How do you edit?’ ‘What to do to avoid distorted graphics?’ He didn’t have all the answers but he told us what to expect.”
It was Goodman’s first time in the Philippines, Fernandez noted. “I hope he enjoyed his stay.”
The network’s next move, added Fernandez, was to develop a “transition plan” that would involve its newly trained personnel. “‘When and how do we go HD?’ This has to be discussed consciously this time around,” Fernandez said. “HD television sets are already in the country, but we have no locally produced shows for them.”
As for those who trained, Fernandez pointed out, “Iba pag nauna ka [It’s different if you’re first]. This translates to ratings and revenue.” TV5 is set to transfer to its newly constructed media center in Mandaluyong City by the end of 2011.
