The trouble with Christian Bables’ nose

These days, talking about his alleged fake nose would often “trigger” a negative emotional response from actor Christian Bables.
“I find it annoying. It’s only in the Philippines where I get asked questions about my nose. Why are Pinoys like this? They see someone who is foreign-looking, and they will instantly think something was surgically done to that person’s face,” he told reporters during a recent media gathering for his latest film project, the romantic comedy flick “Recipe for Love.”
Christian explained that he got his aquiline nose from his Spanish mother. “I don’t have to explain this to every person I meet. Why is it that Pinoys set such a high standard when it comes to beauty, but if you look at the people setting this standard, you’d ask ‘nasaan ang beauty?’ I’m sorry, pero triggered ako!”
Christian said he found it sad that bashers tend to be harshest on celebrities because these people bank on their looks. He also said he would never go under the knife—to reduce the size of his nose—just because other people are asking him about it.
“Why would I change myself? I find this to be very unfair, not only to me, but also to other artists. You don’t know us. Why do you say mean things?” he asked. “This is what I want bashers to realize: Learn how to love yourself, so you can love others.”
Earlier during the press conference, Christian joked about the difficulty of shooting his kissing scene with “Recipe for Love” leading lady Cora Waddell because they both have pointy noses. “Our noses would hit each other. We had to angle our kisses well,” he said, laughing.
Christian added that compared to the other characters he had portrayed on the big screen, Chef Calix is the closest to his real self. “I’m not a chef, I needed to work on having the characteristics of being one. My mentor, Chef Reggie Aspiras, helped me a lot in that aspect. As a Christian, I’m so passionate about acting—I eat, breathe and live acting. Chef Calix is like that. I needed to imbibe that characteristic, too,” he explained.
Asked what for him is the recipe for true happiness, Christian said: “It’s simple: listen to your heart and follow what it says. Do not be affected by what other people are saying. I know this because in the short time that I’ve been in show biz, I’ve had experiences that taught me this the hard way.”
“Recipe for Love,” with Jose Javier Reyes at the helm, also features Sophie Albert, Myrtle Sarrosa and Enrico Cuenca. It opens in cinemas on Nov. 21.
