Show biz is no ‘bread trip’ for sassy Sophie

Most young stars are breadwinners. They join show biz to help their families financially. As we say in local parlance,  “Tawag ng matinding pangangailangan.” But not in the case of Sophie Albert. She was born with a silver spoon. So her foray into the biz is more of “a want” than “a need.” It’s no “bread trip” for this sassy rich Asian.

The Kapuso sweetheart is making waves in “Pamilya Roces” (weeknights after “Onanay” on GMA 7) as a tactless and “kikay” millennial. Sophie is usually prim and proper but she has no qualms about letting her hair down in the comedy series.

Here’s my chat with Sophie:

How do you feel that your boyfriend Vin Abrenica is with ABS-CBN—a situation that has thwarted your onscreen team-up? Working together was a great experience but I always knew that it wasn’t going to be forever. I am super proud of him and happy to see him doing his own thing well.

How do you and Vin make your relationship work? We talk about the roles we get offered, and we also give each other honest feedback. I don’t see the need to set limitations because we respect each other’s judgement. I don’t want to be crippled by limitations or be the cause of a missed opportunity. We’re very supportive of each other’s careers.

Do you get jealous if Vin has kissing scenes? It’s uncomfortable for me to watch. But it’s no issue. We know it comes with the job.

How do you feel about the good feedback you are getting? It is a big bonus, so encouraging since it’s my first time  to portray an off-beat role.

How would you handle it if you find out that your dad has two other families, like in  your show? It would be devastating because of the betrayal and the lies. But any family conflict must be resolved. It won’t always be easy, but we should accept all the craziness and drama that come with each one.

What’s your most memorable scene in the series so far? The first scene, which we shot in a hospital. The entire cast was present. It made me feel proud to be in the same room with the actors whom I look up to and to be directed by Joel Lamangan. It was a surreal moment.

What’s the best and toughest part of being a millennial? Toughest part is that the internet and social media are such a big part of our lifestyle. It’s easy to be judged based only on your social media presence. On the other hand, we are able to easily share more awareness about issues that are important to us, making people more involved or more accepting. I think millennials [belong to] a passionate generation and we are changing the world.

Rico J’s controversial pic

To lighten the mood at the wake of Rico J. Puno, I chided his son, my friend Rox: “So did all your Papa’s ex-girlfriends pay their last respects to him?”

He shot back: “All accounted for. I was pleasantly surprised to meet Papa’s first girlfriend. They were together way back during his Spindle gigs.”

As for his dad’s “controversial”  black and white photo beside his casket, Rox explained: “Some netizens were questioning why we used that pic of Papa smoking. Papa was the one who chose that shot because it shows na may ‘angas’ siya. He was also the one who chose to wear a light-colored coat and polo instead of the usual barong.”

Even on his last day on earth, Mr. Macho Guapito made sure to leave an impact. What a dramatic exit indeed.
