A very special group of performers will take centerstage tonight in Salosalo Autismo. These are adults with autism.
“We know about children with autism, says Dr. Lirio Sobrevinas-Covey. “But we don’t hear too much about adults with autism. Today, in fact, there are more adults with autism because these people live long lives.” Dr. Sobrevinas-Covey, who has lived in the United States for 45 years, has a son Mikey, now 40 years old.
Together with other parents of autistic adults, she set up in 2011 the Association for Adults with Autism Philippines to foster the goals of awareness, adaptation, acceptance and accommodation for this sector of society.
Salosalo Autismo is a benefit event to raise funds for a future community in Alfonso, Cavite, where these special individuals can live independently and learn productive skills. Called “The Happy Place,” the village aims to continue to shelter and nurture them should their parents no longer be able to take care of their needs due to illness or age.
The event takes place today at 6 p.m. at the Marquis Events Place, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. For more information, call 0917 881 2836. /cbb
