Remember when a few years back, Dong Abay tied himself to a tree in protest? The singer-composer was conveying a message all along, but the message may have fallen on deaf ears.
The former Yano vocalist looked back today, Sept. 18, on the time when he protested on the cutting of pine trees in Baguio City back in 2012. His recollection of his protest touches on environmental issues related to the devastation brought by Typhoon Ompong.
He posted an old photo of himself tied to a pine tree in Session Road, Baguio City. This was taken back in 2012 by Andy Zapanta. He protested then about the cutting of 182 trees to make way for a parking lot.
While he acknowledged he drew flak from the protest, Abay now said, “Pero sa palagay ko ay mas marami ang nagkaugat ang kamalayan.” (But I think that more people now have grown aware.)
“Pagkatapos ng bagyong si Ompong, siguro’y alam nyo na ngayon kung ano ang ipinaglalaban ko,” Abay added. (After Typhoon Ompong, maybe now you know what I’m fighting for.)
The musician’s post, carrying his message about the environment, has quickly gone viral with 57,000 likes and reactions, as of this writing.
The recent typhoon left the summer capital of the Philippines flooded on Saturday, Sept. 15. It triggered 39 landslides and nine fatalities in Baguio alone. JB
