One of the most important things Ronnie Henares has learned from managing artists—and helping many of them achieve stardom—is that, in show biz, money isn’t everything.
“We don’t look at the money—we look at the project. You have to find something that would elevate your talent’s status; something that would help them grow and develop. The money will follow,” he told the Inquirer at a recent press conference for “Twofus: Reunion of Friends”—his coming concert with close friend Jojit Paredes.
The veteran producer-actor-talent manager, who had handled the careers of such music icons as Regine Velasquez, Lani Misalucha and Nanette Inventor, believes that young aspirants still need someone who can guide and help them navigate the industry.
This despite the fact that people can now do things by themselves through social media or digital platforms.
“Discovering is one thing, but managing is an entirely different animal. It’s up to you to polish the diamond, or cut it and turn it into jewels. Being able to maximize the potential of a talent is the key to being a good manager,” said Ronnie, who currently manages award-winning young actress Mary Joy Apostol and singer-actress Alexa Miro.
Mutual respect, he added, is just as crucial. Managers shouldn’t feel that they’re beyond doing menial tasks for their wards. “When Nanette was with me, I used to carry her wardrobe,” he recalled.
Ronnie is lucky to have been part of the journeys of stars who never fail to look back despite their status. “I’m the godfather of three of Regine’s sisters… I gave a eulogy for her father when she couldn’t.”
Ronnie is a mainstay in the GMA 7 sitcom, “Pepito Manaloto,” and is set to star in the upcoming series, “Cain at Abel.”
