Being a respected actress in her own right, it’s likely that Ai-Ai delas Alas has mastered the art of crying on command — it’s a non-negotiable in the world of acting, after all. But this time, delas Alas didn’t need any director’s prompting nor a script to cry — winning best actress in the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival awards show on Aug. 12 was the catch in her throat.

Delas Alas shared on Instagram on Aug. 12 a video clip of her covering her face with her olive green jacket, bawling her eyes out upon discovering she won the best actress award for her role in “School Service”, a story about a syndicate of street children run by Rita (delas Alas).

It was her eldest son, Sancho, who told her of her win.

(Sorry about this reaction…I was watching “The Clash” and analyzing those who won and competed. Then Sancho told me, “Mom, you won Best Actress?!” (asking excitedly)… and I said, “Oh my GOD I won I won!”)

“Super crayola 48 colors thank you LORD SOBRA!! NANALO AKO (Thank you so much Lord! I won).

Delas Alas further shared that she couldn’t believe it at first.

Bigla kong naisip tama ba dinig ko? Haha bigla ko tinanong si Sancho totoo ba yan anak? Sabi nya oo ma si direk [Louie] tag ako… so ayun naniwala na ako… at ngayun na nahimasmasan nako.”

(Suddenly I thought, did I hear it right? I suddenly asked Sancho, is it true? He said yes mom, director Louie Ignacio tagged me… so I believed it… and now I’ve come to my senses.)

Delas Alas expressed her gratitude to many people and wrote that she is sharing her award to director Ignacio, along with all the actors and crew behind the production of “School Service”. She, too, shared her award to actresses Iza Calzado and Glaiza de Castro who were also nominated for the same award.

Meanwhile, it was Ignacio who accepted delas Alas’ award on her behalf. In another post made the same day, delas Alas shared a picture of Ignacio claiming the trophy on stage during the awarding ceremony.

Thank you direk [Louie] sa pagtanggap ng award @direklouieignacio and thank you po sa jury ng CINEMALAYA AT SA CINEMALAYA,” expressed Delas Alas.

(Thank you Direk Louie for accepting the award and thank you to the Cinemalaya jury and to Cinemalaya.)

And congrats din sa aking mga co nominadong aktres magagaling ang mga kalaban ko (Congrats to my co-nominated actresses. My competitors are so talented)…  @missizacalzado (Iza Calzado) @glaizaredux (Glaiza de Castro), Tita Perla [Bautista], Ms. Celeste Legazpi, at sa lahat ng nanalo sa Cinemalaya (and all those who won in Cinemalaya) CONGRATULATIONS PO… TO GOD BE THE GLORY.”

Congratulations, Ai-Ai! NVG
