Lessons from Sarah G

Jason Dy and Sarah Geronimo

Three years after winning Season 2 of the talent search “The Voice of the Philippines,” Jason Dy continues to carry with him the lessons he had learned from his coach, Sarah Geronimo, as he pursues his singing career.

“She instilled in me the value of professionalism, passionately committing to what you do, putting in the work and respecting the craft,”
he said at a recent press conference for “Soulja,” his upcoming concert with Jaya and Jay-R, which will be held on Aug. 30 at Newport Performing Arts Theater.

“She told me to always be early and prepared for each project,” added the 28-year-old R&B singer.

Sarah also reminded him of the importance of improving and evolving as an artist. “There will always be someone better than you. So you have to make the most out of the opportunities you get,” he said, adding that rejection makes one appreciate personal victories—even the smallest ones—even more.

“I auditioned for a lot of competitions. ‘The Voice’ was my sixth. Being rejected is hard. And I thought I had nowhere else to go,” Jason said. “But once I stopped putting pressure on myself, I ended up winning. There must be a reason God gave that to me, and I won’t put it to waste,” he said. —ALLAN POLICARPIO
