Ai-Ai delas Alas in “Area”
Ai-Ai delas Alas clarified that her recent social media post about being respectful of different religions was merely a “generic” reminder to everyone, and not directed at anyone in particular.
On Instagram, she said she’s “proud to be Catholic” and pointed out that “insulting someone’s religion” was tantamount to “insulting something meaningful to them. Everyone must be conscious and respectful,” she wrote. “You don’t have to agree with other people’s beliefs, but you don’t need to disrespect them.”
In an interview at a press conference for GMA 7’s new singing tilt, “The Clash,” Ai-Ai—who posted the message amid heated online discussions sparked by President Duterte’s controversial remark about God being “stupid”—said it’s her duty as a Papal awardee to defend her faith.
“One day, I woke up and saw that a lot of people are fighting on Facebook; some were saying bad things about priests. And I was hurt seeing that … Let’s just respect one another,” Ai-Ai said.
In October 2016, the comedienne formally received her Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal, which is given by the Roman Catholic Church to lay people who have offered “distinguished service” to the religious institution.
“When I was given the honor, I made a vow to defend the church. I have to fulfill my duties to God, and make sure I abide by His teachings,” she said.
The 53-year-old celebrity likewise stressed that she can’t and won’t “judge anyone.” “That’s what my priest reminded me. I’m a sinner, so I can’t judge. It’s all up to Him,” said Ai-Ai, who wants to focus her energy on her show biz projects and responsibilities.
In “The Clash,” which airs Saturdays and Sundays starting July 7, she will sit as a judge, together with singers Christian Bautista and Lani Misalucha. Though she’s not a full-fledged recording artist, she believes she’s well-equipped for the task, having judged other reality talent searches in the past.
What is she looking for in an aspiring singer? “Vocal quality and stage presence. You need to have heart and passion, which can help you shine,” she said. “More importantly, you should have star quality—that one thing that mesmerizes viewers and draws them to you like a magnet.”
“I have seen some of the contestants, and it’s heartening to see them dreaming of building a career in the industry,” she added.
And after winning international acting awards for her performance for the indie film “Area,” Ai-Ai is set to star in yet another heavy drama titled “School Service”—an entry in this year’s Cinemalaya film festival. Both movies are directed by her friend, Louie Ignacio.
Teased if she feels she has a chance of winning best actress, Ai-Ai said: “What’s important is that I give my best. If I don’t win an award, then I guess my best wasn’t good enough!”
