Being physically fit means one is in good health. Ensuring that one’s environment is in a good condition is also an important aspect in maintaining one’s well-being. And is there a way to help in the proper disposal of trash, plastics for example, while keeping fit?

Apparently, there is. This is what Erwan Heussaff and his brother-in-law, Nico Bolzico, showed on Heussaff’s latest YouTube video, posted on Monday, June 18. Following the Swedish fitness trend “plogging” which involves picking up litter while running, the duo decided to run for 10 kilometers from McKinley towards the direction of Antipolo City.

Armed with garbage bags and sanitary gloves, the two went to complete their task. Sometime during their run, they had to stop for a while, after an emergency concerning Bolzico’s shoe laces.

There was also a point during their exercise when Bolzico accidentally slipped from a puddle. Nonetheless, the duo continued to pick up plastic despite the rainy weather.

Heussaff and Bolzico collected two half-full garbage bags of plastics on the first 2 kilometers of their run. Heussaff remarked that the bulk of the plastics they have collected so far were from those that were thrown carelessly and buried in the earth.

By the end of their run, they ended up collecting large garbage bags of plastics. Heussaff noted that the plastics they collected are mostly composed of plastics used and disposed everyday — candy wrappers, water bottles and shopping bags, to name a few.

Moreover, he said that as they were getting closer to waterways, the amount of the plastics they collected increased. This is problematic, since these waterways will eventually lead to the ocean. Heussaff admitted that although what he and Bolzico did will not make a lot of difference in the greater scheme of things, they want their experience to start a conversation on proper plastic disposal.

Heussaff also shared via Instagram a photo of them alongside the garbage bags they collected, on the same day the video was uploaded. “Plastic is not the devil, the problem is how we use it and how we dispose of it. [Consume] consciously, don’t litter, educate people and try to lower your impact on our planet,” Heussaff appealed.

Meanwhile, last Friday, June 8, the world celebrated World Oceans Day. The aim of the celebration is to raise awareness on the importance of the ocean in the lives of people, as well as to address problems affecting the ocean, particularly plastic pollution. JB
