The cast of Jerrold Tarog’s historical epic “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” trooped to Rizal Park, in full revolutionary regalia, to take part in the Independence Day parade last week.
Needless to say, the actors were mighty proud to represent their film in the annual festivity that was spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
“It was a very unique and exciting experience,” recalled lead actor Paulo Avelino, who came in costume as young general Gregorio del Pilar. “We were the only nongovernmental group invited to the parade. It was an honor for us to be given the opportunity to join the celebration.”
Costar Mon Confiado, who led the “Goyo” contingent on horseback with Avelino, related that the gathering, which marked the 120th anniversary of our country’s independence, “was a landmark event” for the entire ensemble.
Confiado, who reprises the same part (Emilio Aguinaldo) he played in “Heneral Luna” in “Goyo,” explained: “It was the best venue for us to show our support for the heroes who fought for our freedom.”
He confided that the “Goyo” squad had other activities in the works. “I’m inviting everyone to join us soon.”
Rafa Siguion-Reyna, who essays the role of Goyo’s brother Julian del Pilar, was just as enthusiastic: “Seeing everyone in the celebration … made me feel very proud. I love how Filipinos continue to partake in the tradition, even when circumstances (like the unfavorable weather) make things difficult. Being proud of who we are … is what makes the Filipino, and this was on full display during the parade.”
They were unfazed by the slight downpour that greeted them at the park.
“It was lovely seeing all the people who participated in the parade, rain or shine,” quipped actress Gwen Zamora, who won the coveted role of Goyo’s beloved Remedios Nable Jose. “Thankfully, it wasn’t hard to keep dry as I was comfortably seated in a covered horse carriage.”
Art Acuña, who portrays Goyo’s trusted aide Manuel Bernal, exclaimed: “I welcome rain. It’s good luck! It’s Life! It bodes well for ‘Goyo.’”
Tomas Santos, who was cast as Manuel’s younger brother Angelito Bernal, insisted that the unpredictable weather “made it even more fun!”
Confiado concurred: “I already set my mind that I would be getting wet that day. But really, everybody in the team was ready to get drenched, especially me and Paulo, because we were on our horses. But it was worth it!”
Avelino asserted: “Even if it was raining, we really wanted to do it. I didn’t mind the drizzle at all. It was an important celebration and seeing everyone cheer for ‘Goyo,’ and reading the netizens’ amazing reaction online after, made it all worthwhile.”
“Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” opens nationwide on Sept. 5.
