Evan Rachel Wood recounts suicide attempt
“Devastated” by author-TV personality Anthony Bourdain’s suicide last week, “Westworld” actress Evan Rachel Wood recounted her own suicide attempt in a series of tweets.
“He was such an inspiration to me. #crushed,” she wrote. “Having been on the other side of suicide before in my life, I understand the hopelessness and the longing for peace. I hope he has somehow found his.”
Wood, in February, elaborated on being raped by two different attackers years apart, and the self-harm that followed. She told the United States Congress’ House Judiciary Subcommittee of her ordeals to urge the implementation of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights across 50 states.
“After my suicide attempt, I was so weak I couldn’t walk,” she continued. “I had nodes on my vocal chords and couldn’t sing. I couldn’t even write my name without my hand trembling. It was like starting from [zero]. But every day, I held onto the railing of the hospital and walked, starting with just a few steps, before I was out of breath … little by little, my strength returned.”
She recalled crying “tears of redemption and hope,” and advised her struggling followers, “Don’t be hard on yourselves. Just walk, a little bit more, every day.”—OLIVER PULUMBARIT
