Why Nirvana songs still a no-no for Dave Grohl
It has been 24 years since Kurt Cobain’s death, but to this day, Dave Grohl still couldn’t bring himself to listen to Nirvana albums.
“For years, I couldn’t even listen to any music, let alone a Nirvana song. When Kurt died, every time the radio came on, it broke my heart. I don’t put Nirvana records on, no. Although they’re always on somewhere,” the Foo Fighters frontman, who used to play drums for Nirvana, told GQ magazine.
Dave described his time with Nirvana as a “personal revolution”—a phase of his life that brought some of his “greatest highs” and “biggest lows.” And when he looks back, he discovers something new about Kurt.
“I remember the shorts I was wearing when we recorded [songs], or that it snowed that day. Still, I go back and find new meanings to Kurt’s lyrics,” he said.
“Not to seem revisionist, but there are times when it hits me. You go, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize he was feeling that way at the time.’” —ALLAN POLICARPIO
