Miss Earth PH bets: ‘Nothing wrong with using interpreters’

Though the Philippines is ranked among the top English-speaking nations in the world, Miss Earth Philippines 2018 candidates believe there is nothing wrong in using an interpreter in the question and answer portion of the pageant.

Liz Mabao, a candidate from Mandaluyong City, said language should not be a hindrance. “If they have a hard time explaining themselves, they could always have a translator,” she said.

Ma. Karina Salazar, who hails from General Tinio,Nueva Ecija, said they should be able to speak in the language they are most comfortable with because it’s not really the speaking skills that matter but “the heart to serve our countrymen.”

Last year’s title holder, Miss Earth-Philippines 2017 Karen Ibasco, had been praised for her wit and English-speaking ability.

Mabao said they’ve attended trainings to enhance their language skills and possibly level-up to Ibasco.

Forty-two ladies are vying for the Miss Earth-Philippines crown this year. The much-awaited coronation night is set on Saturday, May 19, at 6:00 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The event will be streamed live on the pageant’s official Facebook page and will be telecast on ABS-CBN at 10 a.m. on Sunday. /ee
