It would come as a little surprise to anyone that Sharon Cuneta’s social calendar is one that’s always booked, considering her popularity and jovial personality.
The Megastar admitted in an Instagram post that she isn’t able to attend every event because of previous commitments and illnesses. However, there is one main reason why she has avoided social gatherings.
“I WAS ASHAMED TO GO BECAUSE OF HOW FAT I WAS, that I knew no matter how hard I tried, I could never look like ME,” she wrote candidly.
She revealed that she felt too self-conscious to be seen among several people: “I knew mean souls would laugh and snicker and talk behind my back, and why, I asked myself, would I want to give them the opportunity to do all that and put myself through all the pain and humiliation they would’ve caused me?”
However, she has her regrets. “Now I wish I HADN’T CARED ABOUT THEM. BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT MY INAANAKS (godchildren) MUCH, MUCH MORE. Never again.”
“This is only the second wedding I proudly attended and in which I could focus on only the most important people in the room – the bride and groom: 1. AiAi [de las Alas] and Ge [Sibayan], and 2. Billy [Crawford] and Coleen [Garcia],” she said.
“I do not say ‘yes’ to being ninang (godmother) to just anyone because I take the role seriously.”
Cuneta graced Billy Crawford and Coleen Garcia’s April 20 wedding in the exclusive island resort of Balesin, looking elegant in a blushing pink wrap gown. She wasn’t able to stay long as she was set to perform at a tribute concert for former ABS-CBN chief Gabby Lopez.
Now, the actress-singer knows better than to take invitations for granted. “I wish I attended all those other binyags and weddings before,” she admitted, “but I thank God that I not only can attend what occasion I care to nowadays.”
“I have realized I shouldn’t care too much about how I look, as long as I honor my inaanaks by caring enough to look decent enough for their special day.”
Certainly in the end, it’s one’s presence with loved ones that matters the most. JB
